When we thought about what traditions are changing rapidly in Icelandic culture with more international influences, the cafés came first into mind. Today people meet a lot in cafés, have a coffee the Italian way and maybe a croissant on the side. The old tradition, with big homemade cakes and traditional Icelandic pastry served for guests in homes, is almost disappearing. We wanted to recreate this atmosphere and celebrate the national day, the 17th of june, the old traditional way. We baked cakes and set up a cosy party where every guest was welcomed with a huge piece of cake. The cakes were both edible and non-edible.The week before the national day we were more or less covered in paint and frosting. The edible ones were rather untraditional, chocolate-cake-towers, castles, volcanos, turf houses with sheeps, 5-layered cakes with cream, and one cake even weighed 15 kg! The setting was very old fashioned and traditional. We dressed in the national costume and as a servant and played Icelandic patriot songs.
